14 Most Inspiring Black Couples (2014 Edition)
7. REVEREND A.R. & KAREN BERNARD
A.R. and Karen Bernard are community leaders continuing to make a difference from New York City to the world through family, faith and politics. The Bernards are parents to seven young men and pastors of the largest church in New York City, Christian Cultural Center (CCC). The church is known as for having one of the fastest growing congregations in the country and the couple has gained the respect of national and world leaders alike. On October 1, 1972 the couple married each other and a few years later, after Rev. Bernard’s conversion from Muslim to Christianity, the couple became pastors of a church in New York. The two have worked to make their church a hub for the community. CCC has outreach programs that serve thousands of people each year. Programs include a food pantry, a Prison Ministry, various city organizations such as the New York Police Department’s orientation, literacy groups, schools for inner-city children, and many more. Rev. Bernard stated in a recent CBN interview, “My desire is to effect change within society by representing the biblical worldview and the biblical value system.” Rev. A. R. and Karen Bernard are looking to shift the culture of their community as was done by faith-based leaders years ago by being involved in such events as giving the invocation at the 50th Anniversary of The March on Washington.
