We chose Jordin Sparks for our Fearless Friday because we are very proud of the exceptional young lady she has become. She has tackled her life and legend with zeal and passion and all the time seeming to have NO fear of failing at love or life! Here’s to Jordin!
There has been a lot of media fanfare circling Jordin Sparks recently and she undoubtedly has the GLOW OF SUCCESS all over. This week on the Today Show, Jordin was gushing as she announced that she just celebrated her one-year anniversary with her adorable beau Jason Derulo. “Sparkplug” (the endearment used by Jordin’s fans) was all a glow as she chatted about how the couple handled her steamy kissing scenes with Derek Luke, her on-screen love interest in the highly anticipated film SPARKLE.
Jordin also talked about the late Whitney Houston on the set and stated “She was just a Mama bear to us all.” When Kathie Lee asked if she had seen any signs of drug use, Sparks replied “noooo, she was inspiring”. Truthfully that question from Kathie Lee kinda got under my skin. We all know Whitney’s history and how her story ends…why continue to dig and poke for something more. It makes me angry that the final installation of Whitney’s legacy is upstaged by her struggle. Boooo at Kathie Lee Gifford!!
But on the flip side, Sparkplug held her own and represented well for Team Sparkle and I was proud to see the “Idol Winner” showed us what she was made of. She also called her real-life Mom (Jodi Sparks) onto the set and they shared a cutesy mother/daughter moment. Jodi Sparks briefly mentioned Jordin’s brother PJ who plays college football, following in the footsteps of their father, retired NFL player Phillppi Sparks.
The 1976 remake of the Afrian-American classic SPARKLE opens today. The film stars Jordin Sparks, Derek Luke, Whitney Houston, Mike Epps, Cee Lo Green, Carmen Ejogo, Tika Sumpter, Tamela Mann and Omari Hardwick. I’ve heard some simply awesome things about the cast but I understand the one to watch is comedian Mike Epps “there is nothing funny about his character”.
The movie has some familiar folks on the production team including Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil who were featured on our 14 Most Inspiring Black Couples list earlier this year. The Akil’s are the duo that brought us some of our favorite works like Jumping the Broom, Girlfriends and The Game. With the all-star cast, the stellar production team and the ‘classic’ factor I can’t wait to see the box office explode.
In addition to the film the Sparkle Soundtrack is expected to be a big hit with singles from Whitney, Cee Lo and Jordin. Not to be eclipsed by the film and soundtrack is the book. Sparkle: A Novel is based on the film’s 2012 screenplay and was penned New York Times best-selling author Denene Millner.
Forget being BEDAZZLED, I’m about to go get SPARKLED…. stay PEACHY everyone!
