Our last two articles provided great information on your PERFORMANCE and IMAGE and their importance in your career growth and success.
The last piece of the P.I.E. is EXPOSURE.
It’s all about who you know…WRONG! It’s all about who knows you. I know Michelle Obama; she has no idea I even exist. Knowing her will get me absolutely nowhere.
Early in my career, I wholeheartedly believed that all I had to do was work really hard and the promotions would come. What I noticed was my co-workers, who didn’t work nearly as hard as I did, kept being tapped for what should have been my promotions. What the heck was going on?? My co-workers were slackers who butt kissed all the time. And I REFUSED to kiss anybody’s butt to get ahead.
It wasn’t until I had been in Corporate America for about 10 years that I realized my co-workers weren’t butt kissing; they were networking!! They were accepting the invitations to play golf with the boss and other department heads; and spending time talking to the C-Suite and senior executives at company functions to ensure that those folks knew who they were and what they wanted to do with their careers. My co-workers were getting invaluable EXPOSURE to the decision makers within the organization. What a novel idea.
I cannot express how important it is for the influencers and decision makers within your organization to know:
1. Who you are
2. What you bring to the table
3. Where you want to go in your career
Networking and getting exposure isn’t difficult and it’s nothing to be afraid of or intimidated by. The “important” people in your organization are people… just like you. Find out what interests them (usually any topic about them will work) and begin asking questions and appearing interested. Eventually, they will do this really neat thing – they’ll start asking you questions about you. And the getting to know you better phase is underway.
There you have it folks, the whole P.I.E. Remember, you need all three elements: Performance, Image & Exposure to ensure maximum success in your career.
