Oscar Winner Offers Obama A Little ‘HELP’
Well the bottom fell out of the political world this past Wednesday when President Obama told ABC’s Robin Roberts that he supports Gay Marriage. If you missed all the hoopla, check out the details as posted from our friends over at Prune Juice Media. Anyhoo, I say “GOOD FOR OBAMA”!! Its about time somebody put this issue in perspective. I just don’t get the big deal about all of this! If I keep it 100, I’m just not all that concerned with what folks do behind closed doors and who they choose to spend their lives with. I’m faaaarrr more concerned with their character, and how they treat themselves and others. Some of our greatest assets (in terms of people power) are members of the LGBT community (hope I got the acronym right this time, LOL). I won’t insult you or them by typing up a list here, but lets just say this great country of ours wouldn’t be the same without diversity, and that includes sexual orientation.
Now don’t get me twisted, I’m not about to join a PRIDE parade, I’m far too self centered for that (#EmotionalNudity). But I’m happy to see that I’m not alone in my opinions. Yesterday, Oscar-Winner Octavia Spencer made a rather bold and lengthy statement on her position. I love that she is using her newly found fame to take a stand for something meaningful to her. Octavia is very close friends with Tate Taylor, the openly gay writer/ director of The Help. I’m happy to see her loyalty and support for those she cares about (note my earlier statement on character).
In my humble little Georgia opinion, if we spent half as much time trying to solve world hunger or cure HIV as we do worrying about folks sex lives, then we would have solved both issues and have a head start on curing cancer too. I’M JUST SAYING… stay in your lane people!

I’ve never been a proponent of telling people how they should think or what to believe. The good news is I won’t start now. Here’s what I will say. Our President did a very brave thing in coming out in support of gay marriage. Why brave? Well, it is an election year, and this is a touchy subject for many, i.e. he has a lot to lose.
This shouldn’t be a political issue, but it has become that in yet another way to divide our country. Where the election should be focused on education, health care, the economy, the spotlight has now been turned to Gay Marriage. So this is where we are: the separation of church and state and human rights for all.
There are many of you who say, this doesn’t affect me, I’m not gay. I’m not either. But actually, If you’re a person of color, meaning all NON-WHITES, or a WHITE WOMAN this is your fight, too. Why? Because not even 50 years ago the social strata had people of color on the sidelines without any civil liberties. Barely 100 years ago the same social construct held women with little regard.
REMEMBER, the same arguments used to dissuade the collective against the civil rights of women and people of color THEN, are the very antiquated arguments being used against GAY MARRIAGE TODAY! (And sadly The Bible was misused as a weapon of separation then, as it is being mis-used now.)
As one who has benefited from the Women’s Suffrage Movement and the Civil Rights Movement, I am obliged to be a voice in the Gay Marriage Movement because every time I take a deep breath in our great country, I’m reminded that freedom isn’t free. It came for me at a great price and I am willing to acknowledge that…. are you?
